Versescapes
Versescapes are immersive poetry installations where language becomes environment.
Audiences engage through writing, sound, and interaction—transforming spaces into shared experiences of reflection and meaning-making.
The Problem
Most poetry readings are passive. Audiences sit, listen, and leave. Most art exhibitions keep viewers at a distance. Look, but don't touch.
Versescapes challenge that model.
In a world where people crave connection and participation, art experiences that keep audiences as observers feel incomplete. We need spaces where people can actively engage, contribute, and become part of the creation itself.
How It Works
Versescapes are multi-sensory poetry installations designed for galleries, cultural spaces, events, and public environments. Each installation includes:
Core Elements:
Textual Tapestries
Large-scale surfaces where audiences write responses, reflections, and their own language—co-creating the environment.
The Living Journal
A traveling, hand-bound archive that moves with the studio to every installation. Participants contribute to a cumulative dialogue, weaving their voices into a continuous lineage across different communities and time.
The Typewriter Exchange
A participatory poetry station guided by a simple principle: type a poem, take a poem.
Live Performance
A cappella poetry performances where audiences respond in real-time, creating communal dialogue.
Each Versescape is adapted to the space, audience, and themes — with room for co-design with the partner organization. The core components remain consistent; the experience shapes itself to the people inside it.
Versescapes are ideal for:
Galleries and museums seeking innovative, participatory programming
Cultural festivals and public art initiatives
Brands and organizations creating experiential activations
Educational institutions exploring immersive learning
Conferences and events looking to create memorable, reflective moments
Perfect for any space wanting to foster connection, reflection, and co-creation through language.
Past Work
Small Works Gallery, Philadelphia (March 2025)
The first Versescape debuted at Philadelphia's Small Works Gallery, transforming four rooms into an immersive poetry environment. Audiences engaged through Textual Tapestries, the Verse Vault, and live a cappella poetry performance—creating a shared space for exploration and dialogue.
Impact + Reception
89% of participants said the use of technology enhanced their engagement with poetry.
100% of participants said hearing other audience members’ interpretations and responses ‘somewhat’ or ‘significantly’ changed their own interpretations of poems.
Philadelphia's Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) High School (March 2026)
Supported by Kelly Writers House at the University of Pennsylvania, ADSS brought Versescape to CAPA's Black Box Theater for a week-long installation. Three cohorts of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors engaged through Textual Tapestries, the Typewriter Exchange, the Living Journal, and live a cappella poetry performance.
Impact + Reception
86% of students found the experience "Very Engaging" or "Somewhat Engaging"
79% of students said hearing other students' responses changed how they thought about the poems
79% reported the experience is likely to increase their attention to their own poetry and creative writing
“Armstead was open and responsive to all of their feedback, at times probing them to think further and extend their creativity...As a teacher of nearly 15 years working with outside guests, this was the most seamless preparation and execution I’ve experienced!”
